DESCRIPTION

The new SAM's new restaurant is much better than it needed to be, which is good news for anyone visiting the museum over lunch- or dinnertime. Head chef Christopher Conville's menu takes a sustainability-minded approach to New American, and in dishes like the barley risotto with spring peas, beans, yellow onion and truffle and the weathervane scallop strudels with melted leeks, mushrooms and a spiced-carrot reduction, it pays off big time.

Great Food, Great Wine List, Service not the best3

After a great experience seeing Giberitti's doors my dining companions and I looked forward to enjoying an earlier Sunday dinner. Surprisingly the restaurant was full, however the prompt attention of the front desk provided us with a table in the bar. Then came the wait - for someone to come by, for service once we ordered, we looked forward to the frites as a starter, they came with dinner after a reminder we had ordered them. The menu selection was good, the wine selection was varied and well priced. The environment was a little harsh. A great location for a pre-symphony dinner - if only the service was more prompt. Could be that one server for quite a bit of the room - but it didn't get any better when the crowds dissappeared. A great concept but the service let us down.

Surprising!4

When we arrived, we thought we were in the wrong place. The ambiance is like an airport or a museum cafeteria. We went back upstairs and they redirected us to the cafe. The highlight of our dining weekend was the soup that day; best either of us has ever tasted. Made from the root of the white celery, it was delectible, complex, with every spoonful intensifying the taste. The pulled duck breast was also excellent; moist, tasteful, with innovative flavor combinations; beets and yogurt underneath. Dessert, was surprising in another way. The pecan pie, when it arrived, was so tiny my husband and I burst out laughing. It was a tart the size of a silver dollar. We had planned to share, we each had a bite; but too small to assess quality. Will be longstanding joke for us to tuck away. Service was wonderful.

Art on a plate.4

A friend and I stopped by on impulse after work, and what a surprise! The Happy Hour food was amazing. We shared some of the best slider-style burgers I have ever had, and a crispy "flatbread" that was divine, both for 5 dollars each. What a steal! The bar service was friendly, and while I didn't have dessert, the person next to me just about swooned over their housemade ice cream. I don't generally go back downtown after work, but if their bar food was this good, I gotta try dinner! The only downside was the decor. Too many hard surfaces to be comforatable, and a little cold. But the smiles were warm ,and that made up for it.
