Formerly a refinery in which coal and oil were turned into gas, Gas Works Park is easily the strangest park in Seattle, and may rank among the strangest in the world. A massive environmental cleanup transformed the plot into grassy hills and bike paths, anchored by the refinery towers, which are brown with rust and covered with graffiti. It sounds like a terrible idea on paper, but somehow the towers seem almost noble in this context.

Also noteworthy: Gas Works Park is the best place to watch the Fourth of July fireworks explode over Lake Union, affords a peerless view of the city, and is widely regarded as the best place in town to fly a kite.
