This raw vermilion shaft of a room is a good bit south of the babbling Broadway scene, in that socioeconomic convergence zone at Broadway and James where doctors and dowagers and students and slackers all eye one another suspiciously. At Michaels, DJs reign (loudly) a few nights a week and the feel is distinctly alternative. So is the pizza, built on dense, sweet crusts and featuring toppings that are frequently as loud as the music. Skip the rest of the food, order a microbrew and revel in the surehanded atmosphere of a place that knows exactly what it is.
