DESCRIPTION

When you do something long enough, you get good at it. Take the University Seafood and Poultry Co., run by Seattle's Erickson family for 60 years. The shop is old-fashioned in the best sense of the word: additive-free fish and local poultry, and an ample selection to appease even the most finicky gourmand.

Venison, rabbit, duck, pheasant, squab and other game birds pack one of the refrigerated cases. Fresh fish filets are at the ready in another case, with live lobster in a tank. The prices aren't posted, but they're competitive with what you'd pay at a high-end supermarket. And if you're ever in the position to consider the oyster, you have 24 varieties from which to choose.

One-stop shopping is possible here, with a wide variety of wines for every price point, accessories such as tartar and cocktail sauce and Cioppino base for the cheaters.

TIP: Call your order in in the morning and you can pick it up that very afternoon.

This place has been around for many years, though it's easy to miss, tucked away on NE 47th as it is. It's a great place to find fresh seafood and specialty chickens, ducks, and the like- at least some of which poultry they import from back east- and about the only option in the U district save the Safeway. They also have a few bottles of wine, and they sell dry ice. I usually stop here for the rest of the meal after shopping the U District Market.
