DESCRIPTION

A 2003 remodel has left DeLaurenti clean, bright and with more room to do what the store does best: pay homage to the foods and wines of Italy. A small freezer yields unexpected surprises for foodies, such as bulk anchovies, ravioli in a rainbow of colors and flavors (try caramelized onion, asparagus or lobster), and lemon sorbet packed into a real lemon shell. If you can't wait long enough to defrost and cook, there's a counter that serves sandwiches and cappuccino.

The shining star in this universe, however, is the deli counter. More than 100 varieties of cheese live here year-round, with seasonal selections mixed in the rotation. Imported prosciutto (who knew there were seven kinds?) and salami happily share space with Boar's Head cold cuts.

To wash it all down, head upstairs to the wine racks, where you'll find an extensive array of around 500 Italian wines, plus a good showcase of Northwest varietals. Confused? There are free wine tastings every Saturday from 2-4 p.m.

Shelves are neatly packed with a bazillion kinds of olive oil; cannoli shells beckon to pastry hounds; and the lovingly packaged Italian cookies and sweets make great gifts — and hey, who says you can't give yourself gifts?

TIP: Come early in the day during the week to avoid crowds, and get better parking.
