DESCRIPTION

Sweetie may be named for a timeless term of endearment, but the clothes inside have the unmistakable swagger of the '60s — from the brown pullover with yellow lasso-style embroidery proclaiming you "beautiful" to the plastic aqua hourglass flip-flops. Fashions flaunt cowgirl, rock 'n' roll and flirty-girl styles, from silky culottes with sashes instead of elastic cuffs, to a V-neck American flag tank sweater. A sundress heavy enough to hold its own shape on a hanger draws your eye to the dress's red swirly designs — and a magazine clipping showing J.Lo wearing it.

While many retro houses are going wild for dots and circles, owner Joeanna Purdie chooses plenty of stripes — vibrantly used in unusual ways on skirts, tops and dresses. She carries labels as diverse as Trina Turk; Hobo International; True Religion; Citizens of Humanity; and Paper Denim and Cloth.

With so much style to absorb, thank goodness there's an amoeba-shaped couch in the middle of the store, and more egg-shaped resting places near the dressing area. (That, too, is all style: It's a rectangle of white shag carpet underneath full-length mirrors with two hospital curtains for differing degrees of privacy.)

If you love the psychedelic decade but not cookie-cutter '60s retro clothes, you just might find yourself sweet on these duds.

Tips: Prices here start in the $60s, another nod to the decade they honor.
