DESCRIPTION
The name is a bit of a misnomer - there's not much junk here; it's more like a retro treasure hunt for those seeking fabulousness. Sparkly, Vegas-style sandals, swoopy sunglasses and feather boas have a happy home here, as do loungy furnishings upholstered in leopard print. There's a strong Asian motif as well, with Chinese lanterns in happy colors, old posters of silken-clad pinup girls and a few pieces of lacquered furniture and room screens.
This is the place to come when you're in need of an authentic peg-leg suit or 1950s cocktail dress, say, or a June Cleaveresqe apron. But it's not all kitsch. There are some handsome antiques here, as well, amid the flowery gilded furniture, Hollywood-worthy fainting couches, floral-print hat boxes and vintage Alka Seltzer posters. A walnut wardrobe might date back to the 1880s; an art-deco-era living room set is given new life through a natty upholstery job.
Tip: The array of stuff can be dizzying and it's easy to miss the sparkly collectible jewelry and other small items. "It's not Pottery Barn, it's not set up like that," says one employee. Take time to make your discoveries.
