DESCRIPTION
"Original," in all its subtleties, is the operative word at this "eclectic general store" that once housed a mechanic's shop in the early 1900s. Owners/sisters Katie and Amy Carson have designed and feature their own furniture and accessory line; other pieces are antiques and unusual imports. The underlying theme of all the items, explains Katie, is that they should look organic - as if they have passed from one person's hand to another rather than through factories and department stores. That can translate to fine Nicaraguan pottery incised with geometric designs, richly hued Philippine Abaca textiles from banana fiber or an earthy set of dishes.
In their Spokane workshop, the sisters Carson fashion found items such as reclaimed Douglas fir, glass, metal and fiber into stylishly organic pieces that transcend eras, able to fit as easily with modern decor as in a more antique-flavored home. Even the items that aren't old or handmade feel that way, such as the Filson hats and jackets or the shiny steel lunch pails.
Tip: The handsome tables of cleaned-and-polished reclaimed Douglas fir on steel legs can be made to order.
