Current puts the "fun" in functional furniture. The showroom for this ultramodern collection of pieces for every room in the house is full of surprises. One hanging lamp, for example, uses an indeterminate light source to illuminate a hologram of a good old-fashioned light bulb. Another takes the design of a spring-arm desk lamp and enlarges it a zillion times so it works as a floor lamp that easily reaches over your reading chair. The lines here are clean, Italian for the most part, with the occasional swoopy form defining a chaise or couch. Then there are the most stately pieces: stainless-steel cabinets that work fine in an office or bedroom; a tasteful line of dishes that won't upstage the food; and the slickest wood-burning stoves with the most graceful door action you've ever seen.

Tip: There aren't many opportunities to catch sales here, so look for the one in the fall.
