DESCRIPTION
But there's more to the Hi-Life. It refines and improves upon the Chow model by serving brunch the most important meal of the day until 3 p.m. every single day of the week. That's more than a nice perk; in this brunch-crazed town, it qualifies as a public service. Add to that a cozy, brick-lined décor (no expense was spared in re-invigorating the interior of the historic Ballard Firehouse) and a kitchen and waitstaff that's already been battle-tested in Chow's other restaurants, and you have the makings of a winner. This will be the place to be in the coming months.

I visited Hi-Life for the first time yesterday, for a late lunch, and to put it mildly: I was not impressed. After waiting a lengthy time for our waiter to take our order, we waited another long time -- wondering where our appetizers and drinks were --when the waiter came back to our table and said, "Now what would you like to order?" Our glances of alarm made him jump and say, "Oh, well, I did already put your order into the kitchen, I THINK." Another 5 minutes before he brought my friend's long-ago-ordered iced tea: except she ordered coffee. The salads appeared about 90 seconds before the entrees filled up the table, making me actually have to hold my salad plate while I ate. Our food can best be described as bland and very much in need of salt. We're not going back.

I live in Ballard- and have ventured to the Hi-Life on many occasions. The food is dependably ok with options for everyone- along with many seating options for parties of every size. However, the service consistently poor and sometimes down-right rude. I try to chalk it up to the fact that the staff is always over-streched. Last Sunday the waiting time for a table was 45 min- yet 1/4 of the tables were empty because they didn't have the waiters to handle them- and the waiters they did have were visibly stressed out. The bartender was rude to the people at the bar as he was attempting to juggle full breakfast service, bar orders, and worldcup channel requests. If you like good service - find somewhere else to dine.

I ventured to the Hi-Life with some friends on Mothers Day 2006; the wait was considerable, but nothing out of the ordinary. When our food finally arrived, I ate my pretty good scramble before trying my potatoes. I reallized as I was eating that they were inundated a mold taste. My friend tried them and agreed, so we informed the waitress. She was wonderful about it and took my plate. Then a waiter from another section approached me and informed me that there is no way that the potatoes could taste like mold since they go through so many. I was stunned, and reiterated that they did - and he snottily replied that he was going to go taste what was on my plate!!!! Our waitress comped the meal, but I had to say that I was very disappointed in the waiter's way of handling conflict.
