September finally has given us the golden days we missed over the summer. And yet, an autumnlike chill filled the air as we waited for everyone to show up at the trailhead for a Mountaineers club scramble of Fortune Peak in the Teanaway area.
Most members of the party were scrambling students who needed a summit to complete their scramble course requirements. Because of the heavy snowpack, this has been a difficult summer for students.

LAKE CHELAN -- The transparent surface of this 55-mile-long inland fjord is stunning, yet you find yourself constantly gazing up while paddling its remote upper reaches.
Up is where you see the flanks of 6,000- to 8,000-foot mountains like Pyramid Peak, Crow Hill and Nelson Butte, 600-foot basalt cliffs that miniaturize your fellow paddlers, and waterfalls that bounce down steep side canyons.
And then there are the smaller sights, such as the perfect upside-down pear shape of a wasp nest affixed to a ledge in a rocky cove, or an osprey winging above the lake.
