PORT RENFREW, B.C. It seemed we were camping in the Amazon no, wait, this place was even wetter than the Amazon, and the jungle drumbeat penetrating my sleep was nothing more than rain on our rented RV's roof.
Rain pelted down all night, filling puddles, engorging waterfalls and nourishing giant cedars that surrounded our campsite on a recent weekend getaway from Seattle.

When it comes to Vancouver Island, Victoria hogs the limelight.
It's a tidy city that tourists love, with its Old-England air; a picturesque small-boat harbor; the excellent Royal B.C. Museum; and stately Empress Hotel. It's the provincial capital of British Columbia, the one big city on 280-mile-long Vancouver Island and the place where most of the 750,000 islanders live.

"Hi Carol. Gone for groceries," said the note tacked to the front door at Ocean Wilderness Inn. "Coffee at your door at 8:30 a.m. Breakfast in the dining room at 9."
The table near an old stone fireplace was already set with English china and a lace tablecloth, but it was the collection of silver tea and coffee pots on a shelf near the kitchen that convinced me we had made the right choice for exploring Southern Vancouver Island.

Summer after summer, I try out Pacific Northwest places for family getaways, always searching for the one with the right stuff.
My wish-list includes:
- Easy to get to from Seattle.
- Somewhere for kids to swim.
- A room with a kitchenette so we don't have to eat out every meal. And decent restaurants for when we do..
- A reasonable price.
So far, one of the places I've found that offers all that — and more — is downtown Vancouver, B.C.
