It's a bluebird afternoon in early June with the mercury pushing 70, but here in the dark forest on the southwest side of Canyon Lake in the Whatcom County foothills, the air is suddenly so chilly I wish I'd worn my gloves.
Two steps back on this lakeside trail and the temp's fine; two steps forward and I can see my breath.

Sailboats and flowers and fish oh, my!
This summer there's a lot to see and do at the Ballard Locks. Enjoy one of many free concerts amid a fragrant and blossoming garden, watch fleets of recreational boats sail to sea, and treat yourself to a fish-and-chips lunch at a local eatery just steps away. You can even see a fish climb a ladder.

If you're looking for a new place to visit with your dog, head over the West Seattle Bridge to
Alki Beach.
For 2.5 miles a paved trail hugs the Sound; perfect for walking or running with your pet. If you want to let your dog do some work for once, try letting him pull you on skates the grass beside the path will cushion your fall. Good weather fills the beach with volleyball players, sunbathers and weenie roasters.

LONG BEACH -- The clouds parted and the rain let up shortly before I reached Long Beach. Strong winds lashed the coast as I pulled into town, and the 30 or so American flags along the main street stood at attention in the stiff breeze.
The overcast continued to break up, the rain diminished, the wind abated, and then -- seemingly out of nowhere -- a rainbow arched over the ocean against a backdrop of retreating dark clouds.
