Hikers no longer can deny that winter conditions and lowering snow levels are here to stay for a while. Sure, many hikers trade summer boots for snowshoes or dutifully grind their way up Mount Si to stay in shape, but even the hard-core may occasionally take a break from thigh-burning workouts or snow sports to explore easier terrain.

Right on schedule -- despite a very dense fog -- the Washington state ferry Elwha glided away from the Anacortes dock at 7:45 a.m., headed for the San Juans and its end destination, Sidney, on Vancouver Island. Although under budget scrutiny this year, the daily three-hour Anacortes-Sidney, B.C., run is routine, with stops at Orcas Island and Friday Harbor along the way.
