Gearing Up
Last time, it was coffee talk. And while I've never met a soul who did not appreciate the deep, dark aroma of a freshly brewed cup of coffee, there are lots of folks out there who would rather sniff the stuff than drink it.
So, for those of you who do not partake in the ebony nectar, I offer you some recipes for equally delicious hot drinks that don't involve those little black beans.
The first is a thick, yummy drink with almost a pudding consistency, so it makes a great dessert as well as a cold afternoon pick-me-up.

It's a Saturday morning after a foot of new snow, and at Stevens Pass the mad dash is on to hit the slopes. Lines are everywhere for the lifts, for a latte, for the loo. At the ticket window, at the rental counters, at the ski and snowboard school. And out in the packed parking lot, a slow-moving conga of SUVs winds its way 'round and 'round those lucky enough to already be parked, drivers desperate to pounce on spaces that just aren't there.

Short Trips
ANACORTES -- Shamefully, I've always considered Anacortes as a destination in Northwest Washington where I could catch a ferry to the San Juans or Vancouver Island. In fact, over the years I've heard others refer to Anacortes like it was the Washington State Ferries terminal.
That's not fair to Anacortes.
Last week, instead of taking a left turn on 12th Street from Commercial Avenue and driving to the ferry terminal, I drove straight ahead into downtown Anacortes. I'm embarrassed to say it was my first-ever visit.

Hike of the Week
There is something special about islands. Time feels different. Even a few hours on an island feels like an escape from civilization and its stresses. Most hikers have explored trails on larger islands like Whidbey and Bainbridge, but there are smaller islands that may be as new to you as they were to us, like Anderson Island.
True, you'll have to take a ferry from Steilacoom, but that's part of the charm.
