DUNGENESS, Clallam County Our cultural and culinary attachment to the Dungeness crab began as a rocky relationship on a sandy beach.
The genesis is revealed through Indian legend, narrated on a plaque at a Highway 101 turnout on the Jamestown S'Klallam Reservation, overlooking Sequim Bay.
"In the old days, before the world came to be the way it is today, a giant crab blocked the entrance to the bay. This prevented the people living nearby from making use of their accustomed fishing grounds."

Short Trips
I have been deprived of fresh-picked, tree-ripened fruit since last fall, so my annual apple mission this year was simple: Drive to the Yakima Valley and scout out where to buy the freshest, crispiest apple. My target, like a trip to Wenatchee last year, would be family owned farms that sell fresh-picked fruit directly to the public.

Hike of the Week
The Tunnel Creek Trail, an introspective route a few miles west of Stevens Pass, is short, steep and sweet, connecting to the Pacific Crest Trail and offering a short approach to Hope and Mig lakes.
These pretty lakes are only a couple of the multitude tucked away in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness.
The Pacific Crest Trail (No. 2000) is most commonly accessed from Stevens Pass, but the approach from Tunnel Creek guarantees more solitude and you also can skip that unpleasant stretch of the PCT where it goes under the ski lifts at the pass.

Gazing out at, say, the serrated horizon of snow-dusted spires along the Stuart Range from the top of nearby Iron Peak in the Teanaway country, it's only natural to want to capture the scene and take it home.
It'll stay sharp in your mind for a while. It'll stay sharp far longer in a good photograph.
