Hike of the Week
We figured this strange low-snow year might afford some additional winter hiking opportunities, so we took an eastside bite of one of my favorite multiuse trails, the 100-mile Iron Horse Trail. It was tasty enough, but with just enough snow to make it sloppy.
The Iron Horse is a rails-to-trails path, following the line of the old Chicago- Milwaukee-St.-Paul-Pacific Railroad between North Bend and the Columbia River.

For young children, any journey through Carkeek Park is a treasure hunt: They might unearth starfish and geoducks while walking on the beach at low tide; or find salmon fry in the river as they hike on a forested trail; or shriek with excitement as trains roar under the overpass where they cross from beach to playground.
Imagine, though, how much more they could discover with a guide.
That's the role naturalist Brian Gay is taking on for his "tyke hikes" at 1:30 p.m. Tuesdays, when he leads young children through outdoor activities at the North Seattle park.

MEGLER, Pacific County — Rex Ziak is driving west on Highway 401, within sight of the Astoria Bridge, when he stops his pickup truck by a thicket of alders on the Washington side of the Columbia River.
He peers into a dark tangle of trees and boulders, a gloomy, sunless scene, like something from an old black-and-white film.
