LAGUNA BEACH, Calif. — Jill Lockhart's nightmare began when she woke up to the sounds of her neighborhood falling apart: wood cracking, glass shattering and jackhammerlike noises she could not identify.
She pulled on a pair of shorts near the bed, grabbed her 2-year-old and threw him over her shoulder, then ran upstairs to get her 4-year-old.
"I said, 'Let's go, we have to get out of the house, the house is moving.' "
As they ran outside, she saw the homes around her slipping away.

Short Trips
The effect on your senses is more vivid than a hearty glass of pinot noir with dinner.
First you weave your way along a jammed Interstate 5 through Portland, travel west at Highway 99W toward Oregon coast beaches and McMinnville, survive stop-and-go traffic through Tigard, then break out into the fragrant, lush and rural Willamette Valley near Newberg.
The 20-minute transformation from urban to rural is one of the most abrupt I've run into in all travels.

Hike of the Week
The payoff may not be worth the work for some hikers, but if you like your trails rough and love a classic Cascades Range, old-growth, valley hike, put the Dingford Creek Trail to Myrtle Lake on your list.
Myrtle Lake is pretty enough, surrounded by big, snaggy mountain hemlock and Alaska cedar, but unspectacular as gems of the Alpine Lakes Wilderness go. However, Myrtle is just a sampler of myriad surrounding lakes that hikers capable of wilderness route-finding could explore on a backpack trip.
And the forest is deep and primeval.
