've noticed I'm spending increasing amounts of time in Ballard. Once upon a time, there was only the girl haven Olivine and a few other interesting shops along Ballard Avenue. But now the compact area has become a true destination shopping hot spot, and one I always recommend to visitors. The influx of hip boutiques and unique stores in Ballard continues, most recently with the opening of Blackbird, the men's clothing store that relocated from Fremont. And there's more to come.

Blustery weather greeted anglers on Central Puget Sound for Oct. 16's chinook opener, but those who braved the storm managed to find a few fish.
"I fished Kingston for blackmouth and we got one fish , and there was baitfish in the area," said Gary Krein, owner of All-Star Charters in Everett.
The Tengu Blackmouth Derby started on Sunday in Elliott Bay, and 48 anglers caught two chinook and one chum.

Standing at the pass that separates the valley of Coldwater Creek from the Spirit Lake basin, you feel vaguely tense but utterly intrigued as the wind howls at your back, the steaming gray hulk of a volcano lies in front of you and the wild whistling growls of bull elk echo through the peaks.
You've backpacked from what looks like desolate wasteland into a steep mountain landscape steamrolled by a hellish wind a quarter-century ago, but now flourishing.

Hike of the Week
If you've never hiked at Crystal Mountain, finding this elusive trail can be like looking for a needle in a haystack. It is well worth the effort, though you'll have to hurry if you want to hike it this year. Snow already is flirting with higher elevations and soon will settle in for the season.
When snow reaches a depth of 2 feet, Crystal Mountain Resort will be thronged with skiers and snowboarders and most hikers will be seeking lower-elevation trails.

Short Trips
I've always had a special place in my heart for Bremerton, partly because of strong family ties as far back as I can remember. My uncle retired from the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard (The Yard, as it was affectionately called) quite a few years ago. My cousin (his son) retired several years ago as The Yard fire chief, though his wife still works there.
