Just about everything in the Rem Koolhaas-designed Seattle Central Library is far-out, so it's not surprising that the library gift shop has a clever set-up. When it's closed, the third-floor retail store known as the FriendShop resembles a giant, sky-colored box. During business hours, it slides apart into five separate structures loaded with gifts and artwork crafted by local artists.

Hike of the Week
In the Issaquah Alps, West Tiger Mountain offers hikers the most possibilities, with a variety of activities, ranging from epic routes to long-distance trail runs to strolls.
The Tiger Mountain Trail officially opened in 1979, and regional trails author Harvey Manning describes it as "the supreme hike of the Issaquah Alps."
The 16-mile route can be hiked one way, but you also can make a sweet eight-mile loop via the West Tiger 3 Trail. Both

Short Trips
A couple of weeks ago, a small, collapsible chalkboard sign on the sidewalk in front of Abracadabra and Summer House -- two quaint gift shops on Water Street in downtown Port Townsend -- said it all, "Think Spring." Well, spring blossoms next Monday, March 20, so it's time for Northwest travelers to "Think Port Townsend."
