"We were completing the business license and we still didn't know what to name the shop," says Cheka-Looka owner Jeff Abandonato, 36. "Then a friend of mine- a total Southern Californian surfer kid who used to butcher the English language any chance he could- said, 'How about Cheka-Looka Surf Shop?'"

Short Trips
SNOQUALMIE -- A real engineer in overalls and a real engineer's cap ...
A conductor with a watch in his pocket ...
A brakeman who waves ...
And a whistle that goes TOOOOT-toot-toot ...
Vern Scott pulled slowly on the lever that engaged a thingamajig that, in turn, urged his diesel-powered locomotive to get going, and it did.
Once again the Snoqualmie Valley Railroad would be on schedule, this time to host a Northwest Railway Museum outing for kids.

Hike of the Week
When I hike the Easton Ridge Trail, it's always a route-finding adventure. Easton Ridge is an intricate and faded Persian carpet of routes, ranging from established trails to game trails. Maps and guidebooks don't agree on mileages and elevations. In fact, the trail to high points on Easton Ridge doesn't even show on the map.
You usually can count on missing a junction or two, and this year lingering snow adds to the fun. In short, you need to take the wrong trail to get to the right place.
