Here in the Northwest, flannel has a particularly potent association. During the early '90s, the uniform of the rugged outdoorsman somehow became the signature shirt of brooding 20-somethings, then a remnant of a bygone musical era. A Seattleite who wore flannel even a year ago risked looking like a walking grunge memorial.

Eight years ago, pinball died. On Oct. 25, 1999, Williams -- then the last remaining manufacturer of pinball machines -- dissolved its pinball division to focus its energies on the design and manufacture of gambling machines. While a handful of small companies make a meager number of new pinball machines each year, the game is by and large extinct. Every pinball machine you see out in the world is living on borrowed time.
