If you want to get the blues, you've got to get low. If you want to find Highway 99 Blues Club, you've got to head downtown (it's got "down" right there in the name) to Pike Place Market and take the more than 150 steps to the bottom of the "hillclimb." The club entrance is at the bottom of another set of stairs -- maybe seven or eight of them -- and in the long shadow of the viaduct. By the time you walk through the joint's front door you're at sea level, or just below it -- as low as you can get without a shovel, or scuba tanks.

Tucked into a wee bungalow off California Avenue Southwest in West Seattle is Smallclothes, just about the cutest darn kids' consignment store I've come across. Owned by mother and daughter Ruth and Stephanie Hargrave, Smallclothes carries a combination of gently used clothes and shoes, as well as several thoughtfully chosen lines of new items for ages newborn to 8 years.

What We Crave
Walking into West Seattle's Bakery Nouveau on an empty stomach is dangerous. Even on a full belly, it's nearly impossible to escape without at least one of their enormous, twice-baked almond croissants ($3.50).
