Pet Dish
I caught the spring-ski bug bad during a spring break in Banff in the Canadian Rockies last week. Sunshine. Fresh powder. And dogs! Not mine, but still, everywhere I went I saw Shep-Husky mountain-town mutts that looked like they could log 50 backcountry miles without a limp. Now, I'm trying to an engineer one more ski outing -- this time with my pups and closer to home at Whistler (which, at last report, still has a 104-inch base).

Little Kids, Big City
Seattle culture counts coffeehouse savvy among the top requirements for locals, so I have been on a quest to find spots that offer both quality joe and a pleasant kid spot ever since Gub was born. Ballard's Firehouse Coffee is always a hit with its separate room full of toys and tables, but sometimes it is crowded or, worse, dirty. Our new favorite spot to meet friends on that side of town is Caffe Fiore, on Leary right off the main drag in Ballard.

Inspiration can strike during the most mundane occasions. Take Courtney
Gilmore. The local makeup artist was having coffee and a muffin with
her family one morning and lamenting the poor quality of some makeup
she was working with. Her uncle suggested she start her own line, the
idea struck a chord with her and a short time later, The Makeup Project was born.

Seattle is lucky to have a number of great Ethiopian restaurants, mostly scattered throughout the south end. We can now add to that list Fana's Cuisine, a bright, modern family-run restaurant that opened last November in the developing Mount Baker business district.
