Pet Dish
I'm a sucker for a bake sale. Throw in a car wash, a raffle and adorable beneficiaries (ferrets!) and you've given me a reason to cross Lake Washington.

"The Fall," screening at SIFF this weekend and opening in general release next week, is a banquet of breathtaking, dreamlike imagery. And if the story sometimes goes flat, there's always another magnificent image to compensate for it.

Little Kids, Big City
The Butterflies and Blooms exhibit opens Friday, May 23 at the Woodland Park Zoo,
inspiring another year of longing in my daughter. She wants nothing
more than for a butterfly to alight on her. She stands stone-still
(difficult for an 8-year-old kid), barely breathing, hoping to look
like a gargantuan version of the flowers blooming along the path.

Even in Seattle, where Crocs line front porches like pockmarked little rubber trolls, "Sex and the City" made Manolo Blahnik a household name.

Circus Contraption reinvents the one-ring circus every time they raise the proverbial big top. Lara Parxton and Erin Brindley took a few moments away from preparing for a preview of the troupe's latest production to talk about artistic renewal, Cirque du Soleil, butt rock and a radical reinvention of s'mores.

Gentle Snark
There's a nice, long weekend ahead. If I were you I'd spend it at one of Western Washington's hidden campgrounds, soaking up the quietude (and perhaps a little rainwater, but we're used to that). Or I'd roll a few frames at one of Seattle's few remaining bowling alleys. At the very least, I'd run down to the nearest ice cream/gelato joint and get a cone. The choice is yours, and the fun starts now.

Last fall, my son asked how long he would have to take swim lessons. My answer? Until he mastered the basic strokes and his teacher felt he was safe in the water.

Daily Find
A steady stream of warm herbal oil poured onto my third eye, located in the center of my forehead. This ancient Ayurvedic treatment is meant to bring psychological and spiritual balance, and heal a plethora of ills, including stress, insomnia, depression, hair loss, hormonal imbalances and headaches. All I know is that I was completely relaxed, and when the last drop of oil dripped on my forehead, I felt blissful. And very oily.
