Baby showers, like bridal showers, have great possibilities. On one hand, the event could be a sweet celebration with close friends in anticipation of an amazing, life changing event. The other possiblity, not to sound ungrateful, is a pile of useless gifts and too much cake.

While at Sugarlump, a childrens' consignment shop in Madison Valley, a couple of days ago, I found what I think is the perfect jacket for little ones in Seattle. This little rain coat from GO!Globo looks common enough, but it features a post-consumer recycled plastic fleece lining, made from old PET bottles. More exciting for the user is the fact that it folds into itself to become a handy little backpack, so mom and dad aren't stuck carrying the thing when the weather warms up.

This weekend my nieces, ages 6 and almost 8, came to spend the night.
We had some time to kill before Gub's dad could join us for a trip to
the zoo, so I scanned the West Seattle Blog for ideas of what to do in our neighborhood, which led me to Max and Quinn's Atomic Boys Shop-O-Rama (4311 S.W. Admiral Way), a retro candy and toy shop in the Admiral District.

I love walking tours, or at least the idea of them. I am an all-weather walker, and I enjoy knowing that Gub is already developing a map sense of her city. Of course, she is still too young to appreciate the educational aspects of a walking tour, but I when I am with her, I often find myself looking at things I'd passed a million times before without notice.

The delicious Mediterranean food at Olive You is worth the trip to Greenwood, but families will be especially happy to head there on Mondays, when kids eat free with paying adults.

Up in Greenwood today, I happened into Twig, the new children's clothier that focuses on local and organic apparel. The cute little shop currently carries duds for the very shortest set: newborn to four years. By fall, owner Angela Johnson plans on adding items to size eight.
