We love the Northwest in the fall -- warm days, cool nights and leaves that take on brilliant shades of fire. And while Seattle has plenty of charms this time of year, new offerings in Portland have us itching to head south.

At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, the adrenaline-fueled sport of BMX racing made its debut on the world stage, and Seattle native and former world champion Jill Kintner played a leading role. After winning bronze in Beijing, the 26-year-old Kintner is returning to her home turf (errr...dirt) to help kids learn to ride. On Saturday, Sept. 27 at North SeaTac BMX Park, Kintner will lead a free Basics of BMX Racing Clinic for boys and girls looking for a thrilling new way to ride a bike.

In a much needed reprieve for Seattle basketball enthusiasts disheartened by the loss of the Sonics, the Seattle Parks Department has announced that NBA all-star Brandon Roy of the Portland Trail Blazers will unveil a refurbished basketball court at the Delridge Community Center on Wednesday, Sept. 17 at 2 p.m.

The Backcountry Bicycle Trails Club (BBTC) is nearing completion of phase two of the new Colonnade mountain bike skills park underneath I-5. To celebrate, the organization and King County Parks will throw a grand opening party on Saturday, Sept. 13. Bring your bike and give the new park a try, or use one of the demo bikes provided by bike industry reps.
