The most basic item at Mr. Lu's -- good old fish 'n' chips ($6.25) -- was the best I've ever had. They'll fry up cod, halibut or salmon, with tartar, ranch, cocktail, barbecue and Cajun sauces for dipping. The fries are the kind that put others to shame. They're firm and crispy with that outer coating of crunchy texture that gives them an added lift.

With the gospel of locally produced food winning more adherents by the day -- not just at the farmers market, but among your favorite restaurants and chefs who want to do the right thing -- it's only natural that the premade-meal market would follow suit. Eat Local in Queen Anne specializes in frozen take-home dinners crafted with ingredients sourced from organic and sustainable farms within a few hundred miles of Seattle.

Even if we rarely set foot in them, there are some restaurants we love just for being there. I was introduced to the Virginia Inn
about 15 years ago, when my search for fellow French speakers led me to

gathering of the city's lonely Francophiles. I found it again years
later in the summer, on a sunny day, when its sidewalk patio beckoned
with an afternoon drink and a perfect lazy perch for people watching.

The sign outside is so mangled, it offers only a slight indication of what you might find within: a bar, some beef, a dish ending in "ibs," and something that at one bygone time was considered "special." The dilapidated exterior is a shame, because special is exactly how I would describe the food at Rose Petals Restaurant.

Does a pimpin' pair of sneakers make you weak in the knees? How about underground hip hop and indie rock? Provocative pop art? If you're defenseless in the face of any of these, then you should consider Triple armed and dangerous. The new Ballard shoe store functions not only as a temple to sneakers, but also a gallery for awesome art and a showcase for local music.

The 1 1/2-year-old Greenwood store has just opened a second store in Roosevelt. In the new shop you'll find the same vintage T's and Western shirts ($6-$140), Levi's 501s ($15-$35), reconstructed denim skirts ($30-$40), sassy dresses ($75-$180) and perfectly worn cafe racer jackets ($80-$550). You'll also find tube socks, belts and plenty of black leather to finish off an outfit.
