VICTORIA, B.C. — "I came in here, saw there was no television and decided this was my pub!" a British accent chirped into my ear.
I had to bend down and lean in close to hear Joan's voice over the band. Seventy-nine years old, with a blunt Bette Davis haircut, the diminutive denizen of Swans pub barely reached my shoulder.
She'd been a regular for eight years, six nights a week, coming to hear music and make new friends, she explained. "I meet so many lovely people."

In 1973, an ad for "island property" put such exotic notions into Olde John Croan's head that he boarded a ferry, made his way down Vashon Island, across the thin strip of land that leads to Maury Island and bought his new place that very day.
"The reason I like this island," says the 79-year-old Air Force and Boeing retiree Croan, who has been using the name "Olde" since 1955, "is because it is country. ... I've traveled throughout the world, and for me, the best place I've ever been is right here."

Your dog loves to bound, unfettered, through old-growth forests, but you feel the need to obey the law, or at least avoid fines?
Though most hiking trails have a strict leash policy, or don't allow dogs at all, those within Mount Baker/Snoqualmie National Forest, but outside of wilderness areas, require only that you have your dog under "voice control."

If you're looking for a new place to visit with your dog, head over the West Seattle Bridge to
Alki Beach.
For 2.5 miles a paved trail hugs the Sound; perfect for walking or running with your pet. If you want to let your dog do some work for once, try letting him pull you on skates the grass beside the path will cushion your fall. Good weather fills the beach with volleyball players, sunbathers and weenie roasters.
