Can the Bite of Seattle get its "bite" back? Perhaps you've had this experience: You arrive at Seattle Center to chow down with a half-million...

Why do lights, like those of White Rock, B.C., appear to twinkle when viewed at a distance, like from the balcony of our second-floor room across Semiahmoo Bay?
The beauty of being able to gear down at a destination resort two hours from home — no airport hassle, no border crossing (for U.S. visitors), no marathon drive — means you really don't have to answer that question.
Sure, there's some atmospheric/scientific explanation of why lights twinkle, but for now, you just sit back, feel the mild salty breeze and enjoy the fact that they do.

ROSLYN, Kittitas County — As we relaxed with our after-dinner drinks, listening to an impromptu golden-oldies songfest around a baby grand piano at the Prospector Inn's Canary Lounge, I had to wonder: Could the coal miners have imagined this?
Could the rough-and-tumble miners who put this tiny mountain town on the map have imagined we'd be here paying more than $200 a night for a room? That we'd end our day sinking into oversized tubs with the biggest question being which bath salts to use: lavender rose or mango papaya?

Wineries? Check.
Tasting rooms? Check.
Endless rows of gnarled grape vines climbing steep, terraced hillsides? Well ... not exactly.
It may seem odd wine country without the vineyards but in Woodinville, it works. At least a dozen wineries now call Woodinville home and more are on the way.
In handsome chateaux and nondescript industrial parks, some of the state's most highly regarded wines are made from grapes trucked whole or as juice from the sunny slopes of Eastern Washington's Yakima and Columbia Valleys.

Getting there: From I-405, take Highway 522 a mile east to Woodinville exit.

Visitors coming from the north (including those who crossed the Hood Canal Bridge) may find the Point Whitney Shellfish Lab a worthwhile first stop, two miles off Highway 101 north of Brinnon. The staff can answer - or help finds answers to - questions on shellfish, fishing and other outdoor activities.
A beach adjacent to the lab is among the areas open for oyster picking this weekend.

WESTPORT - To some people, a perfect oceanfront getaway is a bustling seaside village of souvenir shops, art galleries, nautical-theme pubs and an array of restaurants. Maybe that's why you don't see a lot of those people at this Washington coastal village this time of year.
In fact, some days you don't see many people at all. But that didn't bother Ballard's Peggy Mitchell, who stopped by with a friend recently.
"It's a quiet, little town and I love the sound of the ocean," said Mitchell.

QUINAULT BEACH RESORT AT OCEAN SHORES - "The beach?" The hotel doorman repeated, seeming a bit surprised by my question.
It was 1 in the afternoon on Memorial Day, and my wife and I were checking into Washington's new $50-million Quinault Beach Resort on in its eighth day of operation.
Check-in wasn't until 4 p.m., we were told, but rooms would become available as housekeepers progressed through the hotel. Meanwhile, we could drop off our bags and "enjoy the facilities."
Fine, I replied, how do we get to the beach?
