PORTLAND Kreator was finally in town. That meant a lot to the group of five or six punk rockers sharing pitchers of beer at Capt. Ankeny's Well. They sat at a table outside the pub on Ash Street, waiting for the show to begin, their hair sprayed up high, their eyes black with mascara, their clothing dark and strategically torn.

Ask around Puget Sound and you'll find people whose last journey across the state to Spokane was for Expo '74. That World's Fair left a legacy of a lovely 100-acre park on the rushing Spokane River. Now comes Spokane's next big splash as a visitor attraction: a major makeover of a popular museum and reopening of a showplace hotel. And the river is still there, just to watch as you walk, or for a leisurely autumn canoe ride right on the edge of town.

Heidi Fish bends down and takes a yellow bikini out of a container at her feet. The turquoise one-piece bathing suit and matching visor she wears glisten.
She weaves a hanger through the bikini and hooks it to one of the metal fixtures she has just finished setting up on the sidewalk across the street from the beach. "I specialize in large-busted women," Fish says of her swimsuit line, which she sells on sunny days from this makeshift booth. "They all find me. I think it's 'cause I do custom."

REDMOND Roger Calhoon reached into his pocket and brought out a silver electronic organizer. Whirring and blinking among these gently sloping fields of strawberries, apple trees and pumpkin patches, the high-tech gadget seemed as out of place as the very farm on which Calhoon stood, 47 lush acres hemmed in by strip malls, office buildings and a two-story driving range.
