With a name like La Casa del Mojito, you might expect the food at this small Roosevelt neighborhood cafe to be mere ballast for the booze. But there's also an intriguing menu of Venezuelan and Cuban dishes,
making it clear La Casa del Mojito is more than a cocktail factory.
This is a neighborhood joint looking to fill bellies as it has fun.

ILWACO, Pacific County Just as Capt. William Clark did two centuries ago, Carolyn Glenn climbed the steep pitch of spruce, ignoring coarse sea grass slashing at her ankles. Just like Capt. Clark, she noted the swarms of mosquitoes.
And just like Capt. Clark, she paused in awe as the trees parted like a curtain at the top of McKenzie Head in Washington's recently renamed Cape Disappointment State Park (formerly Fort Canby). Then, as now, the Pacific was suddenly so broad and rough and blue it seemed to peel back corners of peripheral vision.

LA CONNER If there is a secret to catching smelt in the Swinomish Channel, Bob Hart should know it.
He's a member of a pioneer family who landed in La Conner when it was little more than an Indian trading outpost, and he has dropped a smelt jig into the channel's smoky green waters with his grandfather, father, children and grandchildren, often drawing up bright silver smelt by the tubful.
Perhaps the smelt know. After an hour and a half of jigging with Hart, we had snagged only two smelt, which flashed like discarded Christmas ornaments in our bucket.
