The Virginia Inn has operated almost continuously for 100 years under
various owners. The current ones, Jim Fotheringham and Patrice
Demombynes, have spruced it up nicely for the next century. While the
kitchen still has some kinks to work out, I'd encourage you to join the
regulars and hoist a glass at this nostalgic saloon.

One wonders why, with 31 locations nationwide, The Capital Grille would
venture into Seattle, a market already well-marbled with many fine
steakhouses, from the homegrown variety — Metropolitan Grill, Daniel's
Broiler and El Gaucho come to mind — to chains like Morton's and Ruth's
Chris. Do we need The Capital Grille? Or maybe that's akin to asking a woman with a closet full of shoes why she needs another pair.

Years ago, I knew a man named Bill, a single, middle-aged Manhattan
attorney who never ate at home, not even breakfast. He frequented a

made the James Beard Foundation's short list of finalists for "Best
Chef Northwest" and has been tapped as one of the country's best new
chefs by Food & Wine Magazine. Can "Iron Chef" be far behind?

Juanita Village is one of those high-density, mixed-use developments
determined to inject some small-town charm into the suburban landscape.
This Kirkland enclave has a distinctly European look. Low-rise
apartment buildings and town houses sport colorful, variegated facades,
some with balconies. Among the boutiques, salons and specialty stores
lining the meandering, pedestrian-friendly streets are numerous spots
to eat and drink — among them 6-month-old Brix Wine Cafe.

The astute server eyed our group with understandable skepticism: two
couples, two kids, definitely not Asian, and yet we were inquiring
about Bada Sushi's specialty, Korean-style "live" sashimi.

The waiter is from Arles. "How did you end up here? " we wondered aloud. "I followed a woman," he said solemnly. We just had to know. "How did that turn...
