VICTORIA, B.C. What can you say about Liberty Excedera St. Louis except that she's out to bug you?
Excedera, as she prefers to be known, interprets creepy-crawler behavior at the Victoria Bug Zoo for kids who sit enthralled at her beetle-tattooed ankles to hear her tales of bug love and potty habits.
"I'm also well-known for putting bugs on kids faces," she threatened visitors one day last fall.
"Oooh, that's disgusting," someone sneered.
Exactly.

PORT TOWNSEND A shrimp flops out of the trap onto the deck and assumes a ferocious mood, boxing the air with spidery front legs as if to say, "Lemme at 'em."
A sea urchin draws up into a defensive, spiny green ball all the better to ignore you, my dear.
And a red rock crab, upside down in Jim Norris' hands, just plays possum, as his kind tend to do.

INDEX, Snohomish County There arent any sidewalks here. Dont need em.
Theres no movie theater, dry-goods emporium or hospital, although there used to be. The quarry shut down in 1932, taking the jobs with it. The high school followed suit in 1942.
This town is just 10 blocks long and two blocks wide. And if you were to stroll it up, down and crossways, you couldnt help but stumble on 54 historic sites and rock-solid evidence that life off the interstate is good.

PORT TOWNSEND 'Twas probably a dark and stormy night, since it was January. And the butler may indeed have done it who knows?
What is known is that sometime before dawn on Jan. 14, 1917, Israel Katz, owner of Waterman-Katz Department Store, went missing from his comfortable Victorian home. Just disappeared without a trace, leaving behind his watch, his glasses and a town that still puzzles over his fate.
Being without a body or a credible clue, the police decided Katz probably took a long walk off a short pier and drowned.

LAKE CHELAN - Not much - and everything - has changed since 1957, when Shiro and Louise Kashino first arrived at Campbell's Resort and then decided to spend every summer vacation at Lake Chelan.
Three generations of Kashinos and 43 sun-drenched Julys at the lake are recorded in nearly a dozen thick photo albums stacked high on the coffee table at the Kashinos' Seattle home.
The Kashino girls morph from diapers to bikinis before your eyes. Shiro "Kash" Kashino's hair grows more silver with a turn of the pages.
