The lighthouse having gone fully automated in 1977, Point No Point's lightkeepers are vestiges of the past. But visitors can vicariously experience the life of a lightkeeper. For the first time in the 128-year history of the lighthouse, the keeper's residence is being leased as a vacation rental.

Mount Constitution, move aside. With the recent opening of Turtleback Mountain to hikers, it's like a whole new world has opened up on Orcas Island.
"You can walk this mountain for three hours and have two hours worth of views," said Tim Seifert, executive director of the San Juan Preservation Trust. "Here, you feel part of the landscape, where on Constitution, you feel like you are hovering over it."

DUNGENESS, Clallam County Our cultural and culinary attachment to the Dungeness crab began as a rocky relationship on a sandy beach.
The genesis is revealed through Indian legend, narrated on a plaque at a Highway 101 turnout on the Jamestown S'Klallam Reservation, overlooking Sequim Bay.
"In the old days, before the world came to be the way it is today, a giant crab blocked the entrance to the bay. This prevented the people living nearby from making use of their accustomed fishing grounds."

The rain started hitting my windshield around Burlington. Small drops at first, then big drops, followed by small drops again and then none at all. As soon as I shut off my wipers, the cycle of precipitation would start all over, reminding me of the unpredictable nature of road trips during Pacific Northwest winters.

The most important building in Port Gamble these days may be the least impressive one in town. Unremarkable and unassuming against the stock of century-old architectural treasures, an 8-by-10-foot espresso stand is a surprising symbol for Port Gamble's renaissance. The little shack is the first new building to go up in this defunct mill town since 1920.
