I love the change of seasons, particularly the fall color in the city -- not so much the leaves on the trees as those bright splashes of concert promotions plastered on every square inch of available space ...

Another highlight of the week will be Saturday's David Lawrence Runway Special, showcasing collections from D&G, Versace and John Richmond ($25). It will take place at an upscale space developed especially for Fashion Week called the Axis, located in Lincoln Square. Some event proceeds benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

First they brought us the Chocolate Feather Boa, the Double Trouble and the Valley Girl Lemon – cake-like donuts that melt in our mouths.

Appointments are filling up for discounted massages and facials during Spa Week, Sept 18-24. This is the first year Seattle has participated in the national event, which invites spas to offer high-end services for a flat fee of $50. An East Coast public relations firm started the promotion in 2004 to attract new customers for its clients in New York, and it's grown to include 10 major cities.

The film reappears at an opportune time - it has a good chance of conjuring an audience that's weary of reptile-infested e-savers and lowbrow comedies. It's a lot like a magic act I once saw in Vegas - while most of it was pretty run-of-the-mill, there were some tricks so remarkable that I'm still mystified by them, years later. "The Illusionist" is far from perfect, but the film succeeds in more ways than it fails. In the end, it works as a fable steeped in our attraction to the intangible, darker parts of this and other worlds. That's what sticks with you after the lights go up.

The stylish spa is situated among the rapidly developing condos on Capitol Hill, toward the east end of the Pike-Pine corridor. Though it's on the small side, the spa’s clever design and architectural details create a feeling of spaciousness. An outdoor private patio is perfect for parties or drying painted toenails on nice days. The decor features energetic shades of aqua, white, red, and dark brown wood. Circular patterns show up in fabrics, chairs and bubble lights. There are two treatment rooms, five side-by-side manicure stations and four adjacent pedicure chairs, providing opportunities for chatting and meeting others. It reflects the shift from punky, partying neighborhood to sophisticated in-city living around this part of the Hill.

One of my favorite pastimes while doing shopping "research" is bakery-hopping. I'm always looking for the best of my favorites - poppy seed cake, brownies, Russian teacakes, chocolate chip cookies, breads, cinnamon rolls, croissants … well, you get the picture.

It seems not a question of if, but of when, Hollywood will see fit to remake this classic, with Brad Pitt in the title role and computer-generated imagery (CGI) technology to “improve upon” the actual North African desert. I can’t stop that from happening. But I can urge you to bring a cushion, have an extra jolt of caffeine and let "Lawrence of Arabia" wash over you like a hot, pure desert breeze. “Masterpiece” is a word that, through careless overuse, has lost much of its meaning – but if this film hasn’t earned the distinction, I’d like to know who a critic has to kiss to get the standards changed.

Grosso brings a different kind of style to downtown and people have noticed, coming from as far away as Vancouver. "The response has been overwhelming," she says. The mix of furniture, lighting and home accents is well-edited, resulting in pieces that create a simple but sophisticated style. Natural elements such as larges pieces of coral, sea shells, mazanita branches and dried-reed bamboo add to the refined aesthetic here.

There's more than natural beauty on Bainbridge Island. Island resident Suzanne Miller opened Ambrosia Beauty, an enticing new beauty spot, on July 25. The well-stocked, bright and airy shop is sure to draw Island residents, saving them a trip to Seattle to buy fancy perfumes and cosmetics. But it's also worth the ferry trip for Seattleites.
