Just about everything in the Rem Koolhaas-designed Seattle Central Library is far-out, so it's not surprising that the library gift shop has a clever set-up. When it's closed, the third-floor retail store known as the FriendShop resembles a giant, sky-colored box. During business hours, it slides apart into five separate structures loaded with gifts and artwork crafted by local artists.

Appointments are filling up for discounted massages and facials during Spa Week, Sept 18-24. This is the first year Seattle has participated in the national event, which invites spas to offer high-end services for a flat fee of $50. An East Coast public relations firm started the promotion in 2004 to attract new customers for its clients in New York, and it's grown to include 10 major cities.
