New play space on Phinney Ridge opens this weekend

Last week I was talking with some local indie business people about the need for a space where parents can work and network with their kiddos in tow -- something like a playground or a cafe that was both kid- and parent-friendly. So this morning I was pleased when I received word that just such a spot is slated to open this weekend.

Playmatters, which will celebrate its grand opening this Saturday on Phinney Ridge, is conceived as a place where parents and other caregivers can network while their children ages birth through five can safely play.

Although we've lived in West Seattle for several years, it wasn't until last summer that I got into the Water Taxi Habit. We live just far enough from the Seacrest dock that it never seemed to be anything more than a bus alternative, but once I actually rode the thing, I realized that speed is not the point of getting on the little boat.

In a refreshing change from the usual car washes and bake sales that typically comprise school fund raisers, the class of 2009 at West Seattle High School has put together, for the second year in a row, the Pet Rodeo and Snooty Walk. This year's event will be held Saturday, April 19 at Hiawatha Playfield.
