About
a month ago, a friend encouraged me to stop by Belltown boutique Fancy to check
out local jewelry artist Shelli Markee's Bird Show, which featured a virtual aviary
of soaring wrought-iron birds on the walls and ceiling. While I was there, I
discovered not only Markee's supremely elegant wire art, but her jewelry.

After
an exhaustive search to locate skin care for a son born with multiple skin
conditions and sensitivities, Shoreline mom Lynnel Jones took the "if I can't
find it, I'll make it," approach. Her
first product, Bien Ella Eczema Butter ($33 for four ounces), which contains no
mineral oil, petroleum, wax, glycerin or what she describes as "impossible to
pronounce ingredients," not only produced good results for her son, it led to a
full line of creamy body butters, scrubs, treatments and facial serums.

If
you're looking for ways to shop local, eat fresh and stretch your food dollars, consider
visiting your neighborhood farmers market. Recently, I sat down for a chat with
Chris Curtis, director of the Neighborhood Farmers Market Alliance, who
had a few tips for getting started.

For
a trip back in time, walk by Swash Letterpress & Design in the heart of Wallingford, and peer
through the window. You'll notice two impressively sized and lovingly restored early
20th-century printing presses -- and owner Julie Cook, an easygoing and skilled devotee of
the art and old-world quality of letterpress printing.

With warmer weather around
the bend, I turned to Jon Aiken, manager for Mud Bay's
new Ballard store, for the
scoop on summer fun and safety for Fido.

We enjoy everything
about this time of year -- except shopping for a new swimsuit. So we turned to Cristina
Silva, owner of Fremont
bikini boutique Tininha's, for advice (and a little hand-holding) about
choosing a suit that accentuates the positive.

If
you blink, you might miss Armadillo Consignment. Located amidst rows of
apartment buildings in Broadview, the weathered storefront doesn't exactly give
a ringing endorsement to what's inside. Which, to paraphrase the two-year-old
store's motto, includes new and "experienced" home and clothing
"solutions."

I
love candles, but when looking for new ones, I usually end up with a splitting
headache. Because with shopping comes sniffing, and after a while, the
synthetic fragrance oils and harsh artificial scents used in many candles cause
my olfactory senses to revolt. But
on a recent visit to the Ballard Sunday Farmers Market, I discovered Ascents
Candle Company, whose 100 percent palm-wax
candles left me headache-free.

When
you volunteer as a hair model, you receive high-quality hair services at a
well-established salon from a supervised stylist in training -- for free. The model
gets a great cut and color she might not have otherwise been able to afford,
and the budding stylist gets a chance to build clientele (along with his chops).
