When
you volunteer as a hair model, you receive high-quality hair services at a
well-established salon from a supervised stylist in training -- for free. The model
gets a great cut and color she might not have otherwise been able to afford,
and the budding stylist gets a chance to build clientele (along with his chops).

If you're a parent, then
your idea of a carefree summer day may not include a trip to the mall with your
kids. But many of our area's shopping centers now offer special events and
savings to help parents and their children enjoy their days off together
without fear of boredom or overspending.

The Spa at Salish Lodge celebrates the Pacific Northwest with a new menu of treatments
that use regional ingredients such as seaweed from Puget Sound, Candian glacial water and those Seattle staples: coffee and green tea.

I
love candles, but when looking for new ones, I usually end up with a splitting
headache. Because with shopping comes sniffing, and after a while, the
synthetic fragrance oils and harsh artificial scents used in many candles cause
my olfactory senses to revolt. But
on a recent visit to the Ballard Sunday Farmers Market, I discovered Ascents
Candle Company, whose 100 percent palm-wax
candles left me headache-free.

When it comes to getting a manicure
and pedicure, you usually have two choices: a high-end day spa with a
correspondingly high price tag or a small salon with rock-bottom prices that's
sadly short on ambiance. To fill the void in between, aesthetician,
jeweler and former boutique owner Thuy Huynh has opened Mimisan Natural Nail
Spa, a reasonably priced spa with high-quality natural products and attractive
décor.

As
alluring as a Bhangara beat, Indian jewelry is a vibrant blend of bold colors,
brilliant gold and a lighthearted musical swing. These elements -- magical when mixed with summer's bare skin and flirty
dresses -- abound in the Bollywood-inspired baubles of Seattle designers Nicole Cruz, Shamila Jiwa and Clare Kittle.

While most Seattle shoppers
recognize her as the woman behind boutiques Show Pony and Olivine, Julie
Merriman Wray began her retail career with a small storefront in Fremont
called Aromatica, where she mixed up her own line of sweet-smelling body care
products. Out of that venture came her
own perfume line called Lulu Beauty, which has
recently expanded with the addition of fragrant candles.

If
you blink, you might miss Armadillo Consignment. Located amidst rows of
apartment buildings in Broadview, the weathered storefront doesn't exactly give
a ringing endorsement to what's inside. Which, to paraphrase the two-year-old
store's motto, includes new and "experienced" home and clothing
"solutions."
