The trio of owners has transformed the petite boutique for fall. A pair of antlers hangs outside the shop. The exterior and interior walls are now a deep plum color, an oversized gilt framed mirror gives the illusion of spaciousness, a faux raven sits atop a pair of stag horns adorned with necklaces, and a black "crystal" chandelier is squarely centered on the ceiling. While it doesn't replicate the intensity of Norman Bates' taxidermy decor, it certainly gives a nod in that direction with an emphasis on organic and entomologically influenced accessories.

The windows of Luly Yang's boutique at the corner of Fourth Avenue and University Street are showstoppers. Pedestrians pause to gape, and drivers do a double take. I've been prodded into motion from honking horns more than once here. The gorgeous gowns and wedding dresses that grace the windows run the gamut from unbelievably elegant to ethereal and fantastic. This month is your opportunity to see these creations come to life.

Owners Kimberly Lin and Jodie Marr had a clear aesthetic in mind when opening their shop in a khaki-colored vintage building made of concrete block. They wanted the open, square space and merchandise to reflect simple, clean design and contemporary use of color. One wall displays dozens of styles of colorful sheet wrapping paper and the opposite wall has orderly rows of single cards. Gifts, stationery and more wrap are displayed on simple, white tables and shelves. There's a refreshing absence of giant floral cards that read "To Mother and Father from Their Daughter."

Come late summer, I'm dreaming about colorful foliage, crisp breezes and updating my wardrobe. Even though it's been years since I've been back-to-school shopping, each August my inner co-ed begins to foam at the mouth a little at the newest and the hippest in fashion trends.

France exports more than fine Bordeaux, perfume and haute couture. It also exports old tires.

Gen X parents and grandparents tired of all the cutesy baby accoutrements out there should take a trip to tottini, a newly opened shop that carries "furnishings for offspring." This is not to say that you won't use the word cute when in this shop. I did about 52 times. It's simply a lively and colorful aesthetic with modern design in mind where pink and baby blue take a backseat to fashionable colors.

Little girls need their beauty fix, too. A pretty up-do, manicure, and pedicure might be just the thing after a hard day at school or a break from piano lessons, soccer, and dance class. Or, for special occasions, they can schedule an afternoon out with the girls and dish about Disney movies while sipping pink seltzer and having their nails painted.

Seattle neighborhoods are far from being saturated with great boutiques (there really can't be too many, can there?) But these hot new shops are popping up in unexpected places, filling the fashion gaps in the city. When it comes to stores, more is always better, n'est pas?
