We've gone to Northwest Folklife for the past two years with minimal tears, using strategy the military could only aspire to. But this is Folklife...so it's a tie-dyed, guitar-strumming, super-chill strategy that might not work so well on a real battlefield.

Ready or not and weather or not, the summer street fair season begins Saturday, May 17, with the 39th Annual U District StreetFair. For two days, five blocks of University Way -- from Northeast 41st to Northeast 50th -- will be completely closed to vehicles, allowing you to freely peruse the wares of some 300 arts and crafts dealers, and to enjoy performances by dozens of musicians and performers on three stages.

I've always kind of wondered about pug passion. As much as I am an equal opportunity dog lover, the bug-eyed, plate-faced pugs have never really captured my fancy. I say this with trepidation since I know they've pretty much cornered most-favored status among Seattle's canine bantam weights.

I know a local dog, who could be an awesom dock diver. He's strapping, agile and can leap doghouses in a single bound. Only one problem: He's afraid of water. So this year--at least--he's no threat to DockDogs competitors at the Puyallup Spring Fair (April 17-20)--the briefer, more intimate sibling of that big fair in September.

Your April routine is well underway, isn't it? You're crumpling your blown NCAA bracket in disgust, rushing to wrap up your taxes and launching another round of excuses about why you're dismissing the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival.

This weekend, Gub and her pal went to Seattle Center's Whirligig festival, the madhouse of bouncy rides and wandering entertainers. Having never brought her to a carnival of any kind, I wasn't sure she would like it, but it took only a few minutes of seeing the other kids at play for her to catch on: this was going to be awesome.

Today, we say goodbye to the pig and put our hopes and dreams into the claws of the rat. Happy Lunar New Year!
According to the always-reliable Wikipedia, the rat in ancient times
was viewed as a protector and bringer of material prosperity, and
associated with charm and order. Hmmm.
