July 14, 2005 Southern (Seattle) Comforts: Georgetown and Sodo
Just south of downtown Seattle are the neighborhoods of Georgetown and Sodo, home to several industrial businesses, some artists' lofts, a few rehearsal spaces, a couple of stadiums and many of the best damn bars in town.
9 Lb. Hammer
(Georgetown)
Something about this saloon makes you an instant believer. Perhaps it's the complimentary peanuts, the cheap drinks or its crowd of punk babes and blue-collar Joes.
Georgetown Liquor Company
(Georgetown)
Georgetown Liquor Company's beer is nice and cold and its sandwiches and entrees are 100 percent vegetarian. Punk rock blares from the speakers and retro video-game consoles offer nostalgic delight.
Goldie's On Airport Way
(Georgetown)
This bustling, friendly sports bar serves up hearty burgers and sandwiches and plays host to lively poker parties and karaoke nights.
Hooverville
(Sodo)
Seattle's rough-and-tumble past lives at this "run-down elegant" bar. The vibe is friendly, the beer cold, the food simple and the atmosphere reminiscent of the Depression-era shantytown that gives the bar its name.
Jules Maes Saloon
(Georgetown)
This classy joint boasts a large and very respectably stocked bar, two stages, a room of vintage pinball machines and enough pure class to fill 10 such bars. Local and touring punk, rockabilly, soul and garage bands tear the roof off the joint every weekend.
Pyramid Alehouse
(Sodo)
Enjoy burgers, pizzas, appetizers and perhaps, needless to say, first-class microbrews at this sports-fan favorite.
The Showbox SoDo
(Pioneer Square)
This 1,700-capacity annex to Seattle's best club-sized venue aims to continue and expand upon the good work of its parent.
Smarty Pants
(Georgetown)
Smarty Pants is a great-looking joint inside and out. It's quieter than its neighboring bars, quiet enough for conversation, and its food and drink options are worth talking about.
Stellar Pizza & Ale
(Georgetown)
Stellar more than lives up to its name. The beer list includes such unexpected delights, the décor is maximum rock 'n' roll by way of an alien civilization, the food is top notch, the servers are terrific and the drink prices are low.
