Wallingford, Greenwood and Green Lake nightlife
Be they ever so humble, there's no place like these homey neighborhoods. The bars and clubs of Wallingford, Greenwood/Phinney Ridge and Green Lake — hereafter known as Lake Wallingwood — are much like the neighborhoods they serve: friendly, low-key, refined and loaded with (quiet!) fun.
74th Street Ale House
This Greenwood institution boasts a large selection of microbrew and imported beers and some phenomenally good bar food, including spicy gumbo, big salads and sandwiches.
El Chupacabra
El Chupacabra serves fantastic margaritas in pint glasses, dishes up burritos that stop just shy of being too heavy and too spicy and draws a boisterous hipster crowd.
Elysian TangleTown
Wallingford's Elysian Tangletown, an outpost of the Elysian Brewing Co. on Capitol Hill, offers the same fine lineup of homemade beer, but a more thoughtful list of worldly noshes, from Chinese black-bean squid to a terrific smoky pork-loin sandwich.
Little Red Hen
The Little Red Hen is a real honest-to-Gilley's honky-tonk. The heartbeat of the establishment, live country western music , beats six nights a week (Wednesday nights are for karaoke). Don't fail to rustle up the bar grub - it's damn good.
Luau Polynesian Lounge
Secluded in Green Lake's "Tangletown" district, Luau feels like an exclusive beach cafe. The mini Coronitas and tropical drinks add to the atmosphere.
May
Housed in a gorgeous, templelike two-story building, May incorporates a very tranquil Thai restaurant on its upper level and a very swank bar downstairs.
Murphy's Pub
A Wallingford staple since 1981, Murphy's Pub boasts dart boards, Tuesday night trivia, live entertainment, 22 beers on tap, 25 single malt scotches, and a hearty selection of sandwiches, burgers and other pub grub.
Oliver's Twist
It's very easy to get comfortable at this cozy Phinney Ridge lounge. The lighting is warm and subdued, the staff is absolutely on the ball, and the drink menu is truly exceptional.
Pig 'n Whistle
Pig 'n Whistle is the very model of a good neighborhood bar. The bar serves up strong cocktails, the kitchen whips up tasty pulled-pork sandwiches and the jukebox plays decent classic rock tunes. What more do you need?
Prost!
"Prost" is German for "cheers," and you're certain to use that word often at this amiable German tavern. Every beer served here is pretty much the best you've ever had.
SeaMonster Lounge
So few hip bars can successfully convey a neighborhood vibe as well as a big-city vibe. The SeaMonster delivers both, along with live jazz, burlesque and punk shows and a killer cocktail menu.
Smash Wine Bar and Bistro
Here "food and wine collide," and what a lovely collision it is. The emphasis is heavily Northwestern, both in the glass and on the plate
