Joel VandenBrink is likeable for several reasons. The 27-year-old South Lake Union resident is immediately approachable, polite and soft-spoken. His axiom for work and play is stitched on his ball cap: "Take some time." He's always smiling, or looks like he's just about to smile. And he makes darn good beer.

The Saturday Knights are Seattle's premiere hip-hop party band. Add
a little punk, soul and blues to the mix and you've got an explosively
fun group. The Seattle music press has been salivating over the group's new
album, "Mingle," ever since advance copies began arriving last winter. On Tuesday, June 24, the group performs a dream gig with hip-hop star Robert Diggs, aka RZA, of hip-hop group Wu-Tang Clan, at Showbox SoDo.

Convergence Zone
In September 1985 my posse and I, along with several thousand similarly rabid teenaged girls, descended upon Oakland Stadium to witness the miracle that was Wham! We stood through a full opening set by Katrina and the Waves and another by the Pointer Sisters. I bought a T-shirt whose then-scandalous price I still haven't confessed to my mother. And we screamed our fool heads off for George Michael.

Life Behind Bars
The Bad Juju Lounge, late of Capitol Hill -- it was originally located in the spaces now occupied by Purr Cocktail Lounge and Moe Bar -- has re-opened in a new Belltown location. That's right: this is location number three. Once more into the batcave, dear friends!

The Georgetown Music Fest happening this Friday, June 13 and Saturday, June 14, is the very definition of synchronicity -- provided that one's definition of the word is "a kick-ass two-day music festival with nearly sixty local and national bands and a veritable river of microbrew."

In an economic downturn, drastic measures have to be taken to kick-start the economy. Troiani, a ristorante and lounge located in the heart of the financial district, has rejected the current thinking and embraced an older, more proven form of stimulus: They're extending happy hour.

Have you ever wanted to give your dog groomer, daycare wrangler or treat-baker a little something more than a tip? Well, how about a shiny trophy presented at a fancy-schmancy dinner?

Putting aside his work in Bauhaus -- which I assure you I am not -- there are three excellent reasons to see elfin art-goth Peter Murphy's "Retrospective" show
at El Corazon on Friday, May 30. They are: "Love Hysteria," 1987;
"Deep," 1990; and "Cascade," 1995. It's on those three records where
you'll find most of the songs Murphy is known for -- "I'll Fall With
Your Knife," "All Night Long," "Deep Ocean, Vast Sea," "The Scarlet
Thing in You," "Cuts You Up" and others.

Brothers Ryōichirō and
Ken'ichi Yoshida are masters of the shamisen, the three-stringed
instrument whose peculiar, almost insectlike twang is invariably one of
the first things that pops into my head whenever I think of Japan.

Neil Diamond is coming to KeyArena, Moby is coming to Neumos and Madonna is coming to Seattle not at all. Were we bad? Are we being punished?
