One of the tastiest refreshments people have been carrying out of Starbucks lately is a book with a deep-blue jacket and the profile of a yellow, smooth-coated dog. That's because the coffee giant decided to sell The Art of Racing in the Rain by Seattle author Garth Stein in more than 7,000 stores.

In anticipation of her visit to Seattle next week, I've been reading Jana Kohl's new book, A Rare Breed of Love: The True Story of Baby and the Mission She Inspired to Help Dogs Everywhere. It's tough stuff.

Anyone who has ever watched a child read to a dog recognizes a certain magic in this natural exchange.

Circus Contraption reinvents the one-ring circus every time they raise the proverbial big top. Lara Parxton and Erin Brindley took a few moments away from preparing for a preview of the troupe's latest production to talk about artistic renewal, Cirque du Soleil, butt rock and a radical reinvention of s'mores.

If your child entertains fantasies of running off with the circus, you might want to sign her up for this summer's first-ever Camp ZinZanni, put on by the ZinZanni Institute for Circus Art. (Yes, that's their real name. This is serious stuff.)

As a parent, I feel like I have a load of local resources at my
disposal for my toddler. The handful of publications that focus on
family, such as Red Tricycle, ParentMap
and Northwest Child, all offer great ideas for families with kids under
10 or so. But what about the next stage? I have been trying to educate
myself on what is out there for the older set, once called youth, now
tweens or teens, and I keep on being excited by all the arts programs
in Seattle.

I went to see Kevin Kling's new play How? How? Why? Why? Why? at The Rep on Friday. Kling is a storyteller from Minnesota and the guy behind more "Driveway Moments" than maybe anyone on NPR. He's also a serious dog-lover.

Remember what Michael Flatley did for Irish step-dancing? That's what the Bellydance Superstars hope to do for American Tribal-style belly dance. They take considerable liberties with the dance form, but audiences are reportedly going nuts for their new Vegas-style show, "Babelesque."
