In and around this burg, there are many ways — and umpteen places — to enjoy a great burger.

Opening in Wallingford this Saturday, Molly Moon's Homemade Ice Cream promises to be to ice cream what another Wallingford favorite, Mighty-O, is to doughnuts.

I don't put away the cheeseburgers the way I used to. Damn you, borderline cholesterol levels! Tasty burgers have become something I have to work up to -- the reward at the end of a long road paved with salads and tofu.

The most basic item at Mr. Lu's -- good old fish 'n' chips ($6.25) --
was the best I've ever had. They'll fry up cod, halibut or salmon, with
tartar, ranch, cocktail, barbecue and Cajun sauces for dipping. The
fries are the kind that put others to shame. They're firm and crispy
with that outer coating of crunchy texture that gives them an added
lift.

The new India Bistro on Roosevelt
opened six months ago, and on our recent dinner visit, it was bustling
with small groups, couples and families — and lots of fresh, aromatic,
well-seasoned and spicy food.

This Ballard cafe is so danged accommodating that I'm tempted to move in permanently. As I write this I'm noshing on a turkey, sprouts, cream cheese and cranberry sandwich and chasing it with sips of my latte, which is made with Zoka's roast, has a delicious foam on it and is basically exceptional in every way. There's a small but boisterous lunchtime crowd, a soccer game on ESPN2 and a big dog lounging next to its owner's barstool, and AC/DC just gave way to Al Green on the stereo. It's a paradise.

The rising stars of the Seattle culinary universe are serving up great
meals -- and, thanks to New Urban Eats, NWsource's totally awesome
dining promotion, you can enjoy an appetizer, entree and dessert at one
of those brilliant upstarts for the paltry sum of $30 per person. It's
more expensive to fill the tank of your Subaru.

What We Crave
Maybe it's the smoky strips of thick-cut bacon or the enormous, juicy
chunks of chicken that escape their sandwich confines like a teenager
skipping out on curfew. Then again, it could be the gooey jack cheese,
heaps of caramelized onions and healthy slather of spicy secret sauce
that all melt together to create their own lusty affair.

"I have great memories of this place," said my pal Giselle, as we straddled swiveling barstools in the dim recesses of the Triangle Lounge. "I celebrated here when Clinton won." That was 1992. It didn't seem to her the place had changed all that much.

Don't be fooled by the name: Dining Out for Life is not a contest prize, but an imperative. When you dine out at one of 150 Seattle restaurants April 24, 30 percent of your bill will benefit Lifelong AIDS Alliance in their fight against HIV and AIDS in the Puget Sound region.
