What's the best freebie you've found while walking around the neighborhood?

While walking around Ballard recently I found a vintage Argus slide projector in perfect working condition. One of the things I love most about Seattle is the way we recycle old furniture, computer monitors and the like by simply leaving them on the curb and hoping that someone picks them up. What's the best curbside freebie you've found while exploring your own neighborhood?

Just last week, my boyfriend snagged a "broken" lawnmower and weed trimmer that were sitting behind a "free" sign on our street in Kenmore. He has already repaired the weed trimmer, and the lawn mower should be fixed by the weekend. You gotta love generous neighbors with limited mechanical know-how. :)

The other night, I happened upon an abandoned yard sale (everything still folded neatly upon blankets, despite it being nearly 11pm), and grabbed a beautiful vintage Borg scale. There was a 60's lamp that I almost picked up the other day, but the thought of wonky wiring stopped me.

The best thing I've ever left out on the street was a boring white wire shelving unit. The sign said "De-gentrify your condo for free!" the next morning, the shelves were still there, but someone had taken the sign.

I found a black panther TV lamp from the 1950's in perfect working order on the sidewalk a couple years ago! I was on my scooter and getting it home was a challenge, let me tell you!

I still have it and it is so cool.

Talulah, that's called theft and hardly counts as a freebie.

There was a "free - take me!" sign on those items, Visitor; my wife didn't do anything illegal. Whoever put the items out on the sidewalk obviously sold what they could and left the rest to be picked through -- hence the phrase "abandoned yard sale."
