What are your teens doing?
As the parent of a toddler, I feel I must be missing out on a lot of activities for families with older children and teens. I recently blogged about the teen blog of the Seattle Public Library, which is more teen than family oriented. But I want to hear what real parents are doing in the city with their families. What programs, venues, etc., do your kids enjoy? What are your best bets for whole-family entertainment?

Post a commentIt is very hard to wrangle a teen into "whole-family" entertainment experiences... They are focused on hanging with friends, shopping and shutting off with their ipods. The best bet is to look for bands they like and take them out to an all-ages show. Many venues offer them - Neumos, El Corazon, and the Showbox, to name a few. There's also the Vera Project, who's mission is to get teen's involved in the local music and arts scene. It's a great way to be part of your teen's life without forcing them into an experience that doesn't fit within their priorities.
Would that we all had cool parents who wanted to go to shows! Sounds like you know the the teen music scene in town. Do you see other parents often, or is it an anomaly?
I think you made a great point about finding a way to interact in their own world. How does that work in families with younger siblings? Are local all-ages shows and venues really full of all ages? Also, are there places that you are excited to have your older kids go, even if you don't go with them?
It depends on the age of the younger siblings... If they are over 11, they will probably enjoy the show. If younger, think of it as a rare moment you'll get to connect with your teenager (find a sitter for the sibling). So often teens are expected to see the latest Pixar film and participate in "family" activities reluctantly that this gives you a chance to let them know you also want to spend time with them and you care about what they care about. If you need to, bring earplugs. But, what I have found, is that a lot of parents of teens like the same local music as their kids do, so it's also a great chance or you to get out and do something you like AND share the experience with your impressionable teen. It is so hard to find connections during the teenage years, this is a great way to do it. They will like you better.
