If you're a guy looking for summer shoes and the idea of "mandals"
-- Birkenstock's uptown cousins -- gives you the willies, you are not
alone.
That's why I recently decided to ask Mario's men's footwear
specialist, John Lee, about appropriate choices for men who want casual
but dressy summer footwear. John was happy to show me his favorites while offering
some good solid tips.

I lived downtown for years and while it was great to have the Pike
Place Market in my backyard, there was really no place to shop for
regular grocery items like ketchup or aluminum foil. The newly opened Kress IGA Supermarket is out to change all that.

"Inspiring Impressionism" places the works of Manet, Degas, Cassatt, Renoir, Cezanne and the like in a historical and artistic context that gives you a real sense of what the artists had hoped to accomplish. It's wonderful to look at, and thanks to a new cell phone audio tour, it's a joy to listen to as well.

If you're mad about -- or depressed by -- the recent efforts by the Sonics' owners and the NBA to move the team to Oklahoma, then we have just the event recommendation for you on June 16. Save Our Sonics is calling all Sonics fans to the Federal Courthouse (700 Stewart St.) throughout the day Monday to show their support for the local (for now) NBA franchise.

One wonders why, with 31 locations nationwide, The Capital Grille would
venture into Seattle, a market already well-marbled with many fine
steakhouses, from the homegrown variety — Metropolitan Grill, Daniel's
Broiler and El Gaucho come to mind — to chains like Morton's and Ruth's
Chris. Do we need The Capital Grille? Or maybe that's akin to asking a woman with a closet full of shoes why she needs another pair.

What We Crave
"You crave what? Red bean paste?" You might think we're crazy,
but we don't mind. We're happy to let you eat all of the fluffy coconut
buns or pineapple rolls. We'll chow down on Mee Sum Pastry's sesame seed balls.

Erin Frost's self-portraits occupy a realm between the worlds created by Bunny Yeager, Cindy Sherman and Diane Arbus -- they are at once erotic, desolated, witty, glamorous and phantasmagoric.

I've always been a sucker for Frisbee dogs. The speed and agility of the thrower and catcher is a thrilling expression of human-dog collaboration. Get your dose of disc dog teamwork on Saturday, May 31, at the Skyhoundz Canine Disc Championships (Petapalooza, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Game Farm Park, Auburn).
